How much state income tax will I owe in 2025 or 2026?

Your state income tax depends on your state of residence. Nine states have no income tax (Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wyoming). Other states use flat or progressive rates ranging from 1% to 13.3% (California's top rate).

    • Nine states have no income tax on wages: AK, FL, NV, NH, SD, TN, TX, WA, WY
    • California has the highest top rate at 13.3%
    • Flat tax states include Colorado (4.4%), Illinois (4.95%), and Utah (4.5% for 2025, 4.45% for 2026)
    • Alabama, Missouri and Oregon let you deduct federal income tax, each with its own limits

The phrase 'no state income tax' gets a lot of headlines. The bill always comes due somewhere. Florida, Texas, and Tennessee have no income tax — and some of the highest property taxes and sales taxes in the country. California's top rate is 13.3% but its base brackets are surprisingly gentle. Don't move for a tax rate; look at the total burden.

    Real-world scenario

$130,000 of income — California vs Texas vs New York

A $130,000 single filer. California state tax: roughly $7,650. Texas state income tax: $0. New York state tax: about $7,420 (plus another $4,200 if living in NYC). On the surface, Texas saves $7,650. Once you add a typical Texas property tax bill on a $400K home (~$8,000–10,000/yr vs ~$4,000 in CA on the same valuation), most of that 'savings' evaporates — and California's home appreciation often more than makes the difference.

    The part most people miss

If you move mid-year, you owe part-year resident returns in BOTH states — and most states tax income earned within their borders regardless of residency. Working remotely from a beach in another state for two weeks? You may technically owe a non-resident return there. The 'convenience of the employer' rule in New York is the most aggressive example: it can tax a remote worker living in Florida if their employer is NY-based.
