Methodology & sources
Federal tax uses the IRS 2026 brackets (Rev. Proc. 2025-32) with the standard deduction for your filing status (married filing separately with a spouse who itemizes: $0, so this estimate is too low). State tax uses each state's 2026 rate schedule on that state's own taxable income: its starting point (usually federal AGI), its standard deduction and personal exemptions, and the credits that stand in for exemptions (for example California's and Utah's). Married filing separately uses each state's single schedule, and head of household uses the state's own schedule where we model one (California, New York, Oregon) and the single schedule elsewhere; the breakdown says when that is an approximation. Age-65, itemized and other state-only adjustments are not modeled. FICA is the statutory 6.2% Social Security up to the $184,500 wage base and 1.45% Medicare on all wages, plus 0.9% Additional Medicare above $200,000 single / $250,000 MFJ per IRS Form 8959. Local income tax is included once you choose your locality: New York City and Yonkers, every Maryland county (and Baltimore City), and the Ohio cities listed. Until you choose one, no local tax is added — for Maryland, where every county levies one, the page says how much is missing.
