    2026 Form W-4

2026 withholding checkup after the new tax deductions

Publication 15-T incorporates P.L. 119-21 into the 2026 withholding tables, but your personal tips, overtime, senior and car-loan-interest deductions are not automatically known to payroll. Use the new Form W-4 or the IRS estimator to account for your facts.

Should I update Form W-4 for the 2026 OBBB deductions?

Check it. The $16,100 single and $32,200 joint standard deductions are in the 2026 framework, but payroll does not know your personal return-only deductions. Form W-4 Step 4(b) points to its Deductions Worksheet, and the IRS estimator now accounts for qualified tips, overtime, car-loan interest and the senior deduction. A multiple-job household should use Step 2 or the estimator rather than repeat deductions on multiple forms.

    • 2026 standard deduction: $16,100 single/MFS, $24,150 head of household, $32,200 joint/QSS.
    • Step 4(b) is an annual deductions amount; Step 4(c) is extra withholding per pay period.
    • Exempt requires no prior-year federal income-tax liability and none expected for 2026; it expires February 16, 2027.

    Project the withholding gap

Use expected total tax from the federal calculator. This checker does not predict your refund.

Itemized deductions count only above the standard deduction (worksheet line 11). If total income minus the senior amount is at least $640,600 single/HOH, $768,700 MFJ/QSS or $384,350 MFS, the worksheet counts 94% of itemized deductions (line 10).

Worksheet limits: tips up to $25,000; overtime premium up to $12,500 ($25,000 MFJ); car-loan interest up to $10,000; seniors $6,000 per person 65 or older who has a Social Security number valid for employment; cash gifts up to $1,000 ($2,000 MFJ), used only when larger than itemized deductions above the standard deduction. Each deduction also has an income test (tips and overtime $150,000, $300,000 MFJ; car-loan interest $100,000, $200,000 MFJ; seniors $75,000, $150,000 MFJ). Above it, the law phases the deduction down, so enter only the reduced amount you expect.

Three rules people still get wrong

Allowances are gone. The IRS says allowances are no longer used for the redesigned Form W-4.

Exempt is narrow. It stops federal income-tax withholding; it does not mean no payroll or other taxes.

Payroll needs your facts. The estimator was updated for the four OBBB deductions; submit a new W-4 if its recommendation calls for one.

    2026 withholding questions

    Do I claim 0 or 1 allowances on the 2026 Form W-4?

Neither. The IRS says allowances are no longer used for the redesigned Form W-4. The current form uses filing status, dependents, other income, deductions and extra withholding.

Are the new tips, overtime, senior and car-loan deductions automatically in my paycheck?

Not automatically for your own facts. Publication 15-T reflects P.L. 119-21 in the withholding tables, but the IRS says an employee expecting the qualified-tips deduction can submit a new 2026 Form W-4. The updated IRS estimator accounts for the four deductions and can recommend a W-4 adjustment.

Can I enter the tips, overtime or senior deduction on Form W-4 if I'm married filing separately?

No. If you are married, each of those three deductions requires a joint return (IRC §§224(f), 225(e), 151(d)(5)(C)(v)), so leave them out of the Deductions Worksheet. The car-loan-interest deduction has no joint-return rule.

What does exempt from withholding mean?

It means no federal income tax is withheld from pay. It does not erase Social Security, Medicare or other taxes, and the 2026 Form W-4 requires both no 2025 federal income-tax liability and an expectation of no 2026 liability. The exemption expires February 16, 2027.

Is the projected overpayment my refund?

No. It is only the difference between the expected total tax and withholding figures you supplied. Credits, other payments, income changes and the filed return can change the final result.
