IRS Interest Rate Tracker
The IRS non-corporate underpayment rate — the number that drives interest on late payments and installment agreements, and the estimated-tax penalty (same rate, figured as simple interest) — is reset every quarter by Revenue Ruling. This page reads live from our audited registry, so the figure you see is the one currently in effect.
Current IRS interest rate
2026 Q4 (Oct 1, 2026 – Dec 31, 2026) · Set by Rev. Rul. 2026-15
How the rate is set
For individuals and other non-corporate taxpayers, the IRS underpayment interest rate equals the federal short-term rate (rounded to the nearest full percent) plus 3 percentage points, per IRC §6621. The IRS Chief Counsel publishes the new rate about one month before each calendar quarter starts, in a Revenue Ruling in the Internal Revenue Bulletin. IRC §6622 requires daily compounding (except the estimated-tax penalty, §6622(b)).

Next announcement — 2027 Q1
The Revenue Ruling that sets the 2027 Q1 rate (effective Jan 1, 2027) is not yet announced. The IRS typically publishes the new quarterly rate roughly one month before the quarter begins.
Where this rate bites
The same §6621 rate drives interest on late tax payments, IRS notices, and installment agreements. The estimated-tax penalty for quarterly shortfalls uses the same rate, but it is a penalty figured as simple interest, not compounded interest (§6622(b)).

- IRS Payment Plan Calculator — the §6651(h) rate cut halves failure-to-pay, but interest keeps running at the rate above.

- Extension → October 15 Guide — an extension is time to file, not time to pay.

What is the IRS interest rate right now?
The current non-corporate IRS underpayment rate is shown above and updated quarterly by IRS Revenue Ruling. It equals the federal short-term rate plus 3 percentage points (IRC §6621) and is compounded daily.
How is the IRS interest rate set?
The IRS Chief Counsel issues a Revenue Ruling roughly one month before each calendar quarter. The non-corporate underpayment rate = federal short-term rate (rounded to the nearest full percent) + 3 percentage points, per IRC §6621(a)(2).
Is IRS interest compounded?
Yes — daily, for interest on unpaid tax and on refunds (IRC §6622(a)). The one exception is the estimated-tax underpayment penalty (§§6654/6655), which uses the same rate but is figured as simple interest (§6622(b)).
Is the refund (overpayment) rate the same?
For individuals, the IRS overpayment rate is generally the same figure as the underpayment rate. Corporate over- and underpayment rates use a different formula and are not covered on this page.
