State child tax credits in 2026
A filing reference for amounts, ages, phaseouts and refundability—with primary-source gaps displayed instead of guessed.
Which states have a child tax credit in 2026?
13 jurisdictions in this registry have a current or latest-published child or child-and-family credit supported by a browser-verified primary state source; each row identifies an earlier source year where applicable. 4 additional reported programs remain in manual review until the current amount and refundability can be verified together. These counts deliberately exclude child-care credits and ordinary dependent exemptions unless the state names or structures the benefit as a family child credit.
- All 50 states plus D.C. are represented
- Every official positive pairs its amount or formula with refundability
- Age and income rules remain state-specific
- No D.C. law in force provides a 2026 child credit; its only source was a disapproved temporary act that has expired

Federal and state credits are separate
Use the federal Child Tax Credit calculator first. A state program may use a different child age, income base or phaseout, so a federal result is not a state estimate.
Frequently asked questions
Are state child tax credits the same as the federal Child Tax Credit?
No. State programs use their own age limits, income measures, phaseouts and refundability rules. Some are tied to another state credit rather than to the federal Child Tax Credit.
Does every child credit provide a cash refund?
No. Refundability is program-specific. Every positive row in this registry puts the current or latest-published formula and refundability together and labels an earlier source year; reported programs without complete primary support stay in manual review.
Does Washington's Working Families Tax Credit count as a child tax credit?
No. It is a state earned income credit and appears in the separate state EITC registry. This child-credit table does not relabel EITCs as CTCs.
Does the District of Columbia have a child tax credit for 2026?
Not under any D.C. law in force as of September 26, 2026. The refundable $1,000-per-child credit for tax year 2026 came only from D.C. Law 26-89, a temporary act that Congress disapproved (H.J.Res. 142, Pub.L. 119-78, signed February 18, 2026) and that, by its own terms, expired September 25, 2026. The permanent Code section (§ 47-1806.17) was repealed by the Fiscal Year 2026 Budget Support Act (D.C. Law 26-55, § 7062). The D.C. Law Library still displays the temporary text. Check the D.C. Office of Tax and Revenue's 2026 D-40 instructions before claiming any D.C. child credit.
